Pain is commonly experienced by all animals whether it be acute or chronic. Pets brought into the clinic to be neutered / spayed, an aged racing horse with arthritis or routine on-farm livestock husbandry procedures are all instances where a non-steroidal ani-inflammatory drug (NSAID) is needed to relieve pain and inflammation.
Treatment of pain can be challenging as signs can differ between individual animals, even animals within the same species. The behavioural changes need to be monitored by your clients so you can tailor the best pain-management program for their animal.
The responsibility in clinic is to ensure that the animal’s wellbeing is maintained once discharged or in recovery. Due to induced hypersensitisation and neuroplasticity, pain is more difficult to control once it occurs.

The Orthokine®vet-therapy is a natural treatment that can stop inflammation by utilizing naturally occurring proteins. This therapy can also promote tissue regeneration, leading to long-term pain relief and protection of the joints.
The process of serum processing involves the extraction of a blood sample from the patient, which is then subjected to a unique preparation method that stimulates blood cells to produce protective proteins possessing anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties. The serum, consisting of these proteins, is then utilized to treat the patient.
The Orthokine®vet-syringe conforms to the regulations established for human medical devices. This ensures that the patient's blood remains uncontaminated throughout the process, allowing for the safe and efficient utilization of ACS as a therapeutic agent.

]]>Before starting to feed the kitten, it is important to determine its age. Kittens generally open their eyes between days 7 and 14. If the eyes are still closed, the kitten is very young, and feeding it will require a lot of work. A visit to the veterinarian is necessary to determine the kitten's health status and age. Any noticeable health problems such as skin lesions, crusty eyelids, or dehydration can be addressed by the veterinarian and appropriate treatment started.
To feed very young kittens, you'll need to obtain a feeding device and kitten milk replacer.. One option is Kyron KITTYMILK Replacement for Kittens, which is a nutritional supplement and milk replacer in powder form. It contains arginine, protein, taurine, fat, minerals, and vitamins that are similar to the content of a cat's milk. It supplies the essential nutrients that kittens need for healthy growth and development.
Many veterinarians use an ordinary eye dropper or a small syringe to dispense the milk replacer to the kitten. Some pet stores or veterinary clinics may have nursing bottles, but be aware that some kittens may not be able to suck the contents through the small nipple. In this case, you may need to squeeze the milk out for the kitten while having the nipple in the kitten's mouth. The mixture should be freshly prepared for each feeding and reconstituted with warm water. It is important not to microwave it since hot spots can occur.
For very young or malnourished kittens, mix 1 level measure of KITTYMILK with 2 measures of lukewarm water. For older kittens, mix 2 level measures with 3 measures of lukewarm water. Kittens should be given 32% of their body weight divided into 24 hours of feeding.
Once the kitten gets the hang of it, they should consume the milk replacer greedily. When the kitten begins to slow down consumption or lose interest, you can stop the feeding.
When the orphaned kittens reach about three weeks of age, you can start providing watered-down meat-based kitten food for them to nibble on. Once they start eating food from the can, you can leave out dry kibble for them to munch on, too. It is recommended to use kibble with good protein and fat levels.
If you notice any health problems or a "poor doer," which is a kitten that lags behind the other littermates in body size, alertness, or activity level, keep in touch with your veterinarian. The earlier any problems are detected and addressed, the better the chance for recovery. With proper care and attention, feeding an orphaned kitten can be a rewarding experience.
At six weeks of age, kittens should be making good progress in eating, drinking, and exploring independently, providing plenty of entertainment. It's important to have your veterinarian examine them and discuss vaccination options, which are typically administered between six and eight weeks old, depending on the vet's recommendations. Additionally, your veterinarian will likely conduct viral testing to eliminate the possibility of feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus.
Another challenge would be to let these cute orphaned kittens go to new homes without you, so good luck with that!
]]>Hyperthyroidism in cats can lead to serious medical problems. Some common signs of hyperthyroidism include:
A physical examination may reveal palpable enlarged thyroid lobes in the cat's neck. Diagnostic testing, such as a blood test to measure levels of the T4 hormone, is necessary to confirm the diagnosis. And because hyperthyroidism is more common in older cats, it is however recommended to perform a comprehensive blood test and urinalysis to evaluate organ function and identify any underlying issues. Even though kidney disease is not directly related to hyperthyroidism, it frequently coexists in older cats. Performing these tests is crucial since other health conditions may hinder successful treatment of hyperthyroidism or even exacerbate the cat's condition.
Medical management is recommended as the first step in treating feline hyperthyroidism. Methimazole is the anti-thyroid drug of choice, and it has been used successfully for more than 20 years. Dechra's FELIMAZOLE® (methimazole) Coated Tablets are the only FDA-approved treatment for veterinary use for managing hyperthyroidism. FELIMAZOLE Coated Tablets are available in 2.5 mg and 5.0 mg strengths, providing dosing flexibility and ease of administration.
The recommended starting dose is 2.5mg administered twice daily, and the goal is to use the lowest possible dose to achieve and maintain euthyroidism. Note that your veterinarian will however discuss the recommended the precise dose management for your cat.
The two-day event was held in Belgrade, Serbia and included, besides some hard work, of course time for fun and networking.
The event started with and update of the Dechra company, followed by discussions around distributor visions for the next 5 years. The Dechra team also included in-depth marketing and technical product sessions.
To summarize the 2 days in Belgrade provided us with valuable information, sharing experiences and enabled us to reconnect with the brand and other suppliers.
We thank the Dechra team for this successful event.

]]>We have compiled some of the most Frequently Asked Questions - answered by Lizzie Drury, MSc Senior Nutritionist from Saracen Horse feeds, to help guide you through this summer (off-season) period.
Q: What are the advantages of performance horses to have a break in the off-season?
A: The resting period provides physical as well as psychological benefits for the horse, this period helps the horse to regain increased energy and renewed enthusiasm for their work. Time-off can also assist with the healing of niggling injuries, reduce digestive conditions such as gastric ulcers and hindgut acidosis and prevent weight loss - Therefore improving overall physical health and soundness.
Q: What are the feed management needs for endurance and performance horses in the desert?
A: These horses need to eat optimum amounts of long forage i.e. fiber to help maintain normal digestive function. Endurance - as well as racehorses tend to finish the season with less than optimum digestive health, this is mainly due to the different feeding regimes and stresses that they are exposed to - so forage would need to feature high on the priority list during the resting period.
Q: Here in the UAE most horses won't have access to natural pastures and thus may not consume enough fiber, leading to underlying digestive issues. How can this situation be avoided?
A: a Combination of the following should be considered:
Q: When a horse come back from their break, what positive horse conditioning changes should be expected?
A: The horse ideally should have gained a conditioning score in the region of 4 (when using the 0 to 5 condition scoring system). If feed and work are managed hand in hand it - these horses ultimately stand a better chance of maintaining optimum bodyweight through the competition season, without losing too much condition very early on.
Remember that any diet and training programme should be adapted and altered depending on the individual horse’s training and setbacks such as injuries or illnesses.

PREVOMAX from Dechra is the first anti-emetic to use benzyl alcohol rather than metacresol as a preservative which is known to reduce pain at the injection site. This has the potential to minimise the sting and help keep the animal calmer and more relaxed.
Some early users of Prevomax shared their thoughts:
Craig Sankey, Business Manager at Dechra says ‘It’s evident from these early experiences that the sting on injection has been significantly minimised by the use of Prevomax and we struggle to see discomfort in patients who have been administered this maropitant, which is better for both pet and owner’.
Watch this video to see it in action:
Prevomax is available in a convenient 20 ml bottle and is administered subcutaneously or intravenously, once daily at a dose of 1 ml per 10 kg body weight, for a maximum period of 5 days. Visit our store for more info.

The high fibre, banana flavoured mash is convenient to feed in all situations to help support and restore water intake in the fussiest of eaters and drinkers. This banana flavoured mash is high in fibre and low in starch and sugar and may be fed as and when needed to make sure even the fussiest of eaters take additional water and fibre.
FIND OUT THE ANSWERS TO THE MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
IS RECOVERY MASH HEATING?
No, RE-COVERY Mash is founded on a base of 'Super-Fibres' known for its superior digestibility and provision of non-heating calories, helping to support optimal fibre and water intake during the year.
MY HORSE IS PRONE TO GASTRIC ULCERS CAN I FEED THIS TO MY HORSE ?
RE-COVERY MASH contains 10% starch and 6% sugar and is suitable for horses that is prone to digestive upset when fed in small quantities. According to the guidelines - when managing a horse with digestive issues, you should not feed more than 2g of starch per 1kg of bodyweight. For example: 500kg horse = starch content below 1kg per day. If 500g of RE-COVERY MASH is fed, this will provide 50g of starch, please however take into account the starch content of the horse's current feed as well.
HOW QUICKLY DOES RECOVERY MASH SOAK?
RE-COVERY mash can be soaked in cold water for 15 -20 minutes, or alternatively you can also soak in warmer water for 5-10 minutes.
CAN I FEED RE-COVERY MASH TO MY HORSE ON A DAILY BASIS?
Yes, the mash can be fed alongside your horse's normal feeding regime and will not cause a nutritional imbalance - as it does not contain a full range of vitamins and minerals. It is rich in 'Super-Fibres', electrolytes and quality proteins so the mash can be fed as and when needed to support water and fibre intake.

RISK FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH EGUS
• Forage being fed at a rate of less than 1.5% of the horse’s bodyweight
• Horses being without forage for 6+ hours, especially during 7am to 11pm.
• 1g starch per kg of bodyweight per meal and 2g per kg of bodyweight per day. Stomach empty of forage during exercise.
• Water deprivation
• Administration of NSAIDS
• Reflux of bile acids
Did you know?
A horse produce about 400 to 800g of saliva / 100g or dry matter when fed pasture and hay, opposed to when a concentrate feed is fed, the horse will only produce half as much saliva, which in turn significantly reduce the buffering capacity.
CLINICAL SIGNS
The clinical signs of EGUS can differ from one horse to another and the horse's temperament can also play a role BUT some typical signs to look out for include:
• Poor appetite or change in eating behaviour.
• Weight loss or failure to thrive.
• Irritability and general changes in temperament.
• Reduced performance.
• Abdominal discomfort to girthing or grooming.
• Recurrent mild colic.
NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT TO REDUCE THE RISK OF EGUS
• Horses should ideally have access to forage at all times. We know this might not be possible if your horse is a good-doer but ensure that you don't feed less than 1.5% of the horse’s body weight. Forage fed can be made to last longer, here is a few suggestions;
• Putting hay in a small holed haynet
• Encourage browsing by placing haynets around the horse's roaming field or its stables
• Avoid giving hay allowance only in the mornings or evening but rather spread it throughout the day
• Note that 80% of the horse’s daily forage allowance should be fed between 7am and 11pm.
Restrict cereal and starch intake:
• Starch = 1g/kg of bodyweight for each meal and 2g/kg of bodyweight per day.(When selecting a feed be on the lookout for feeds that has the BETA EGUS Approval Mark as it will ensure you stay below this starch threshold if feed at the recommended intake)
• Should extra calories (energy) be needed look at adding a high oil supplement to the diet so it will increase calories but still minimising starch intake.
• Alfalfa chaff is also recommended - Alfalfa which is high in calcium has a buffering effect on the horse's stomach. Saracen Horse feeds recommend 100 to 200g /100Kg in bodyweight is suitable (example a 0.5 – 1kg will be used for a 500kg horse)
• Corn oil can be added to supplement the diet (50 to 100ml, 1 to 2 times a day) It helps to support the mucosal layer in the glandular region of the horse's stomach.
• Feed a Stubbs scoop of chaff within 30 mins of exercise. It helps to ‘trap’ acid and limit ESGD. It also improves gastric blood supply.
• Always provide constant access to water.
• Aim to reduce stress levels.
• Use an antacid gastric supplement to help maintain a normal stomach environment. Refer to the gut supplement range from Protexin Equine Premium:

“Moon was standing outside an auction. He was shivering, scared and wouldn’t let anyone touch him. Every time a hand went near him, he would flinch from fear. He was dragged into the auction ring, not able to walk in. They whipped him to walk and his legs splayed and he stumbled and skidded across the ring. The bids started and he wasn’t selling. Fearful that he would end up in a worse place, if the lowest bid was too low, I made a bid for him. The hammer went down and I just knew I had to act fast to help this poor little horse. An hour later, I had signed on the dotted line and we started our adventure home. We struggled to get him into the trailer but we eventually got him home. He was kept in isolation until the vet could do some blood tests and checks.
Over the next few days various professionals came to see him: Vet, Osteo, Farrier, Dentist, Saracen Horse feeds - Nutritionist.
Everyone agreed that despite his passport age of 2018, this horse was developed as a yearling with significant growth delay, neglect and malnourished. His shoulders and chest are yet to open, his skeleton is visible and most of his conformation is irregular.
I don’t think he had ever had a shower. His mane and tail were matted into dreadlocks.
Moon wasn’t specially aware, he barely knew how to put one foot in front of the other. He’s currently having lots of hand-walking and several small meals throughout the day. His main hard feed is Saracen Horse feeds - Essential Balancer with a small scoop of Recovery Mash and a handful of chaff.
Our other horses are very patient with him and let him invade their personal space! I think the most heartbreaking moment was when he looked for nipples on a gelding.
About Ashleigh:
Ashleigh is a Primary School Principal and an animal lover, passionate about educating the youth for a more sustainable animal care future. She has been horse-riding since she was a child and shortly after moving to Dubai rescued her first horse. She has a growing family of animal rescues, including cat colonies across Dubai. Her latest rescue, Moon, is the fourth horse she has helped. Moon has considerable needs and Ashleigh has a team of friends around her who are helping to make him stronger day by day.
Note from Lizzy Drury (Saracen Horse feed Nutritionist) whom assisted Moon:
“When I first saw Moon he was clearly undernourished and as a young horse had not had the best start. We had to take things very gradually with the feeding to ensure that we did not give him a serious digestive upset such as colic and also to ensure that he did not have a rapid growth spurt that would further compromise his development.” We utilized forage as the mainstay of his diet and then balanced this with a quality source of vitamins, minerals and quality protein together with a digestive enhancer.
We used the Essential Balancer, which we fed at 500 grams per day. This was fed for the first 6 weeks, while we closely monitored his health and his adaption to a balanced feeding programme.
